How to Solder Ball Valves?

Ball valves are commonly used in plumbing. They are installed in the hot and cold water copper lines so if you have to do a repair job like changing the faucets on a sink or taking out a sink to put a new one in, you don’t have to turn off the water to the entire house. You just turn off the ball valve on the water lines leading to the work project.The handle of the valve is connected to an internal ball that has a hole running through it. When the valve is in the open position the hole in the ball is lined up with the opening in the copper pipes on either side of it. When the ball valve is in the closed position the holes disappear from in front of the pipe openings and no water can flow through. Soldering in a ball valve is no different from soldering a regular copper joint. Here is how to solder in a ball valve on a new copper water pipe installation.

1.Dry fit the copper piping on either side of the ball valve. Pull the copper pipe out and clean it. Use Emory paper to sand the outside of the copper pipe until it’s bright and shiny looking. Push a wire-fitting brush into both ends of the ball valve and twist it around to clean the inside of the copper tubing of the valve.

2.Brush paste flux on the outside of the copper pipe and the inside of both ends of the ball valve.

3.Push the copper pipe ends into the ball valve. Before starting to solder make sure the ball valve is in the open position. This means the handle of the ball valve is parallel to the copper pipe.

4.Light the propane torch. Hold a spool of wire solder in the non-dominant hand. Start heating up the copper pipe where it enters the ball valve on just one side. Watch the flux. When it turns brown and gooey in appearance and starts to bubble the metal is getting hot enough for the solder to flow. Touch the tip of the solder wire to the seam and watch for it to melt and flow completely around the seam. Repeat on the other side of the valve.

How to Repair a Shower Faucet Ball Valve

Fixing a shower faucet ball valve is something that most homeowners will have to deal with at some point. While you can hire a certified plumber to handle the problem, fixing it yourself can save you money in labor costs. A leaking shower valve can also lead to water damage for your bathtub and the surrounding areas of the bathroom. While it may sound like a difficult task to complete, making this repair is actually relatively easy with the proper instructions.

Turn the water supply off in your home. Use your allen wrench to remove the screw on the side of the handle of the faucet, and remove both the screw and the handle. With these items removed, slide the gray plastic disc and the metal sleeve off of the faucet.

Use a strap wrench to remove the brass ring that is holding the remainder of the faucet in place. Once the brass ring is removed, use slow and steady pressure to remove the faucet assembly from its place by twisting the unit counterclockwise until it comes loose. Place a towel beneath the opening, as there is likely to still be some excess water in the pipes.

Open the faucet assembly by simultaneously pressing in and twisting on the blue half. Pull out the black rubber seats from the blue half and replace them with the new pieces found in the repair kit. These rubber pieces are the key to eliminating the leak you are experiencing in your shower.

Place the springs and rubber seats in place and twist the blue and white pieces back together to rejoin them. Re-insert the faucet assembly into the brass sleeve, and use the strap wrench to secure it in place with the brass ring. Slip the sleeve back onto the assembly and put the gray disk back into place. Re-attach the shower faucet handle and turn on the water supply in your home.

Ball Valve:Closing and Bleeding the Valve

Determine which section of the pipe you wish to close off from the rest of the system–upstream or downstream from the double block and bleed system.

Close the ball valve on the side of the block and bleed system that corresponds with the section of pipe you wish to isolate by turning the lever or wheel to the “off” position. Always close the valve slowly to prevent water hammering or pressure buildup in liquids.

Put on your safety goggles and gloves to protect yourself from high pressure or corrosive fluids inside the pipe. Place a bucket or container below the bleed valve, in between the two ball valves in the block and bleed system, to catch the fluid as it is discharged from the valve.

Close the ball valve on the other side of the block and bleed system (the valve that corresponds to the section of pipe you wish to clear) by turning the wheel or level to the “off” position.

Slowly release the bleed valve, either by turning a release wheel or unscrewing a bolt in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Be sure to discharge the valve slowly, as the contents may be under high pressure. Any fluid trapped in the middle portion of the block and bleed system will be discharged into the bucket or container you have prepared.

Close the bleed valve by turning the release wheel or replacing the screw or bolt. Slowly open the valve on the side of the block and bleed system that you wish to clear, refilling the bleed chamber with liquid. To completely clear the section of pipe, repeat the discharge process described in Steps 4 and 5 until the bleed valve releases no more fluid.

To resume normal function after the pipe has been cleared, slowly open the valves on both sides of the block and bleed system, one at a time. Make sure the bleed valve is closed before opening the block valves.
